Cupcake the Mini Pig Reporting
Hi guys, It’s been a while since I shared my story about Mini Pigs helping to rescue chickens, and I guess you could say I have been growing up a bit since then.. I don’t even fit in my harness anymore. I have been wondering how to approach this conversation with you, seeing as this is a fun, playful site about the joys of us little guys, but after what I’ve learned I just have to talk to you, I hope you don’t mind.
You know, life here on Saddleback farm is pretty good for a pig. I have my mum, and a great bunch of cousins, aunts and uncles, and lots of other animals to hang around with.
Life is nice and predictable, breakfast pretty much arrives on time every day, we have dams and mud puddles to cool off in, a nice little creek to explore, lots of open land to wander, graze, and dig, there are even all sorts of trees dropping all sorts of tasty treats to enjoy, especially in Lucy’s orchard.
Every day ends with an hour or two of human company, (I think they look forward to it), and it’s not so hard to play along after all the great things they do for us.
We just all hang around, nuzzle up and even surrender to an extensive back scratch or tummy rub, its hard, but as they say in the classics “someone has to do it”.
A few days ago I overheard the humans talking while my belly was being massaged, at first I could not believe my ears, but I checked and it’s actually all true.
Mini Pig Rescue?
The first thing I heard was that most of my relatives are not my relatives at all. Mum is certainly mum, there is no doubt about that, but most of those cousins, aunts and uncles I mentioned, are not who I thought they were.
It’s kinda like finding out that you are adopted, but in reverse, and I was really upset at first. What I learned is that some of my lovely companions here have rescued, I didn’t even know that word a week ago.
When life is so comfortable here, it’s hard to comprehend a word like that…..RESCUED!
If I am not sleeping in the house with the humans, we all get to go to bed together each night, in a warm, dry shed full of straw, with a great big ensuite, surrounded by walls that keep us safe, even from the wandering dogs, foxes and stuff that we hear moving around outside at night.
Because no one has ever hurt me, and I guess I just assumed that this is how it is, for all pigs, everywhere, all the time….but I just found out that it’s not……that’s what I wanted to talk to you guys about.
It seems that a lot of people get all excited about having a Pig for a friend but for some reason , later on, they think that we pigs a too hard to care for.
Some people don’t have much of a sense of humour either, when we find the gate open and stumble across some delicious tomatoes growing in a row, or dig up a pile of sweet young carrots hiding under the loose soil nearby, and those yellow roses are well worth the risk of getting pricked for as well. My mum brags about the 40 odd ears of corn she found growing behind a fence out back one afternoon….she ate the lot of course, then laid down on top of the broken stalks to feed us kids…great story hey.
Aunt Lacy
I even heard that my “aunt “ Lacy, had to be rescued just because her humans wanted to sell their house.
After having the run of the place since she was little, she suddenly had to live in a dirty little yard down back, without shade, or space to graze and not even room for a toilet area , yuk.
So suddenly Lacy was separated from her little human friend Alice, and was bundled into Gary’s car and brought here.
She said she was so sad and confused, I can’t imagine being ripped from my home like that. Mum says Lacy was one of the lucky ones….not sure I really understand that part.
Please do your research
I will have to tell you about some of the others here another time, cause its getting kinda late, but please if you are thinking of have a pig live with you, please find out all the things we need, and things we do, and make sure you are ok with us really being pigs at your place.Poor Lacy.
Oh one last thing, Gary always says you need to really have everything ready when a mini pig comes into your life, its a lot more involved than getting a puppy, but we make up for all the work because we are so smart and entertaining…….
The point is we fall in love with you guys too, and it’s shattering if things don’t work out.
Pigs as surprise Gifts?
Oh yeah please don’t ever get a Pig as a surprise gift for your friend, especially at Christmas. I hear its a called “a big commitment”, having a Pig and there are not too many Saddleback farms around to rescue us if it doesn’t work out.
Fortunately there are a few great places like Edgars Mission that can step up when needed, but not enough.
Gary says it’s always the Pig that loses when Humans make mistakes.. remember Pigs are for Life.
Lights out!
See ya soon.
