Are you ready for a pet pig?
There are many things you need to consider before committing to a pet pig. Many of them, you probably weren’t even aware of!
- Have you checked with your local Council that you are allowed to keep a pet pig?
- Is this an impulsive decision or have you really thought it out?
- Will the pig be kept indoors or outdoors?
- How will you house your pig?
- Do you have adequae outside space for a pig? (An adult pig needs at lest 1 acre of outside space)
- Where will your pig’s pen be and what size?
- Is your pig’s pen and your yard adequately fenced?
- What type of house will your pig have for protection from the elements?
- Do you have gardens? Will your pig have access to them?
- Will your pig have shade from the sun and a dry area during wet weather?
- How will your pig cool down? (pigs don’t have sweat glands!!)
- Is your pig going to spend most of its time indoors? Will it be able to go outside when you are not home? (e.g. pig/dog door)
- If your pig is going to be indoors, is your house pig/child proof?
- Do you have food and water bowls for your new pig?
- Do you have bedding for your new pig?
- Do you know where to buy pig food from?
- Have you found a vet that can treat your pig?
- Have you considered how long a pig lives for?
Before owning a pet pig, it is important that you carefully consider the items listed especially housing, food, fencing and a vet that can treat your pet pig. A Vet must know the correct anesthetic if your pig needs surgery, (they cant have the same anesthetic that is used on cats and dogs.)
Now if you already have a pet pig, have you addressed all of the items listed above?
This list is worth considering as it will help you make important decisions for the health and well-being of your pet pig.
Now while your considering all of this, heres a fun video to inspire you about the intelligence of pigs! Please note all of these tricks are natural behaviours of pigs…
